Read more inside to get insight on which production software you should begin with. In our tutorial we cover the daunting question of which DAW professionals use, FL studio or Ableton. I'm not saying you should use it exclusively, but launchpads seems a lot easier to use on it. FL Studio vs Ableton is consistently the most asked question when looking for the best DAW. Probably best to learn Ableton, as it's the standard for launchpads. Someday I want to git gud at programming and make a program that makes launchpaddery super duper easy. From my experience, FL Studio is a hell of a lot easier, faster, and more fun for composing (like you said). The fact that Feed Me, Porter Robinson, Madeon, Seven Lions, etc used FL Studio to create their music is enough proof that you can do anything in either DAW. MIDI Effect Racks are weird, and by extension light shows are hard to make I prefer FL Studio for composing, and Ableton Live for working with audio clips. +The rest of the community uses it (for the most part) FL Studio has a lot of cool features which can be done in a more complicated way in other DAWs but one thing that really stands is automation. Similarly to Ableton, there is a section where you can make patterns and a section where you can arrange. I honestly don't know that much about Ableton yet, so I can't say too much about it. FL Studio: There are many ways to go about constructing a song in FL Studio. You really can't change your set of buttons easily, meaning that you are usually stuck with 64 Ableton Live is better at live recording whether that be with a MIDI keyboard or a microphone and in my opinion the workflow is overall much faster, efficient, and intuitive than FL Studio. I use Ableton currently (and also still FL) as a scratch pad- it can be easier to get ideas out, and Ableton integrates into the Push 2, which I especially enjoy for just fun and jamming. No equivalent of User 1 mode, meaning light shows are haaaarrrrrddddd and you can't trigger 2 buttons on the same row at once Here's what I've been able to gather thus far: I enjoy using FL, but the Launchpad works a lot better with Ableton. I use a 5 year old laptop (i7 6700hq, 16gb ram, everything but samples installed on an ssd) and though it's not top of the line anymore, it still runs very smoothly, and it shouldn't matter for the relative difference between FL and Ableton.Īre there any other users who have noticed this? It really seems to me like Ableton is simply thát much more efficient with the way it handles audio processing compared to FL.I'm kinda in the same situation. I consider myself somewhat of an FL veteran so I would be extremely surprised if it's just some setting I have been missing for years on end (long buffers, all cpu optimizations enabled, running Ultimate Performance power plan, lowering ppq helps (but is undesirable) etc. I kind of intuitively knew the limits of what I can run in FL until my cpu starts to play up, but I was always surprised that that moment seemed to come much later in Ableton. I had noticed the difference through occasional use of Ableton in the past but never really tested it out. Continuing to push it, adding a single instance in FL seems equivalent to around 4 new layers in Ableton. And with Ableton? I am not kidding, more like 20. Now see how many you can play at once using a single layer until it starts to glitch somewhat notably. For anyone who has got both: load up copies of some CPU intensive synth patch (say some intense serum preset with oversampling). Hardware works, software works everything just works with Ableton. I feel Ableton is mostly the frontrunner and has a big part of the market. Especially compared to Ableton, which I own for some side projects. I dont know Bitwig and have overall brushed over Logic once or twice, but I have made the switch from FL studio to Ableton after working with it for about 7 years. But as much as I love just about everything about FL, there is one major thing bugging me: the CPU usage. I've been using FL for some 7 years now and will probably never switch to another daw.
